UPDATE

I’m not as far along as I’d hope to be. I was unable to accomplish most goals set for the independent study this quarter. What is most disheartening is that I haven’t been able to meet my exhibition prototype goal either. I needed to have 9 clouds to build a prototype for the MFA exhibition installation. This was to be the “proof of concept” to show galleries how this piece would be assembled and hung. I’m unsure exactly to proceed. I have listed a few options.

  1. Quit
  2. Continue making clouds/focus on production
  3. Stop making clouds/begin research of hanging/mounting systems

Currently, I’m proceeding with making clouds until the end of the quarter and will then re-assess over the summer whether to abandon the exhibition idea or proceed with completion. The next few weeks will either allow the goal for multiple clouds of each model or eliminate this idea as an installation for the exhibition.

I’m becoming more concerned with how this will be assembled and hung. I will likely need to shift focus from the production of the forms and testing of paint and glazes, to development of how this piece can be assembled and hung (drilling of holes in the proper location, use of salt to balance, material to use for hanging, and the overall system for mounting/accuracy of hanging).

Exhibition Works (artworks that are interactive, sustainably minded)

Adaptive Re-use/Upcycle of “trash” (importance of material?)
Solar-powered (when possible)
Ecological Sustainability (materials, energy, place and space)
Cultural Sustainability (engagement, recreation, learning)

Requires people to put down their phone and interact with one another
Not stagnant artworks

Focus on the four dimensions of social sustainability

  1. amenities and infrastructure
  2. social and cultural life
  3. voice and influence
  4. space to grow

INTERACTIVE CULTURAL ARTIFACTS

Interactive (sensors, physical, non-physical, passive, active)
Cultural (community-focused)
Artifacts (objects/adaptive re-use of materials – when possible)
