RESEARCH AND INSPIRATIONS:

this section should include ideas, quotes, snippets of readings, embedded videos, inspirational images, links related to the course or a current assignment/project

I’ve been working A LOT lately. More than I ever like to or want to. So much of my time is spent on my devices. Phone calls. Email. Texting. Tweeting. Blogging. Reading. Everything. Sooooo tired of the glowing box. It snatched my soul. I spend more hours awake than asleep. I spend more awake hours working than living life. Hours spent hunched over, looking down.

I found this image from artist Bob Winkler’s UNL dorm room ceiling. 1975. It reminded me of a simpler time. The feeling was peaceful. restful. calming. I’m unsure if I’m aware of why lying down and looking up at something with movement feels so free-ing! I wonder if others feel the same.

For years I’ve been low-key obsessed with mobiles and as most already know, clouds. All of this leads to a desire to create something that hangs from the ceiling. Potentially objects that collide to make noise. Or perhaps objects that are light and move with the flow of air.

PROGRESS AND PROCESS:

this section should include in-progress images of projects and assignments, scanned sketches, descriptions of progress

I’m interested in edge-lit acrylic. I’m also interested in laser cut acrylic tubes. My first idea involved laser cut 6′ acrylic tubes that could be edge lit, hung from the ceiling or floor-standing in clusters. These would have sentences or contemplative text/statistics. I contacted Plastic Care, but they are unable to laser cut acrylic tubing and know of no local contacts for cylindrical laser cutting.

The second idea involves the evolution of a prior artwork that involves the plaster cast of cloud shapes. These cloud shapes would be hung from the ceiling, close together, designed to create a blanket-like texture across the ceiling. The desire is to create a peaceful and reflective space, absent from the noise.

REFLECTION: LOOK UP!

this section should include what you accomplished that week

I’m feeling super constrained by size. I’ll have ideas for execution – or a desire to increase the scalability of a project – but then run into limitations with dimensional size development, or actual ability to produce what I would like to create.

I was able to do research, ideation, and development this week. Mostly reaching out to resources to help clearly define what is possible for this project. I feel strongly that is should be something hanging that can be dimensionally navigated and seen from all sides, and most importantly, below.

I’ve also thought more about what should be hanging. Perhaps there is a juxtaposition of objects we would typically look down at, being suspended from above. Just an idea. Needs further development. Bottom line, I just need to spend more time LOOKING UP!
