THE ELEMENTS OF COMMUNITY
This public-space projection project is inspired by the foundational elements of traditional community: fire, water, earth, and air.
Small communities were geographically developed around ease-of-access to the elemental needs of the group – fire, water, earth, air. The gathering of water and wood, the preparation of meals, the moments of reflection around the fire, provided the context from which ‘small community’ was born. These moments gave the opportunity for life lessons on courtesy, kindness, and good will.
I would suggest the elements of fire, water, earth, and air became the catalysts through which human society was developed. They are the foundation on which we have built ‘community’.
