11 New Cloud Types Named https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/03/eleven-new-clouds-atlas/ INTERNATIONAL CLOUD ATLAS https://cloudatlas.wmo.int/home.html Clouds have always been an important part of my life. When I started my business in 2012, I named it "CLOUD 10". I started branding the business with the concept of clouds and have named all of the computer/electronic equipment we own off of cloud types. CIRRUS, CUMULUS, PILEUS, NOCTILUCENT. These are all parts of "CLOUD 10." I started the development of this project with the direction of "BROWN CLOUD" but the more we talked about this piece as an exhibition component, the more the work [...]

what you make and why you make it develop connections, increase awareness Heidi Landis creates work that encourages social engagement. She stimulates the exchange of ideas and the strengthening of interpersonal relationships through creative campaigns, digital technology artifacts, and thoughtful open space environments. explore creativity through theoria (knowing) + praxis (doing) + poiesis (making) CREATIVE PRAXIS I utilize methods of digital fabrication to create physical objects that communicate concepts and ideas across space, time, and culture. As humans, we navigate a material world through their preservation and use. Material culture refers to the physical [...]

THE SUN SET If you're a person who hates to stay indoors watching television on a bright sunny day, we've got the perfect set for you. Because with the solar-powered Sun Set, you can go outdoors and watch television on a bright sunny day. The secret is the screen. Instead of a conventional white screen, the Sun Set has a special black screen that cuts down the glare. Which means that the picture won't fade out unless it's supposed to. And since it plays off the power of the sun as well as rechargeable batteries, there's nothing to stop [...]
ICE MELT Rising temperatures are reducing ice cover on land, lakes, and sea and this is expected to continue. The retreat of the Arctic sea ice in winter is less dramatic than in summer, but there is a continuous reduction of the ocean surface covered by the ice. The Arctic Ocean is expected to become essentially ice free in summer before mid-century. Explore declining ice cover. Sea ice in the Arctic has decreased dramatically since the late 1970s, particularly in summer and autumn. Since the satellite record began in 1978, minimum Arctic sea ice extent [...]
SUSTAINDESIGN_FINAL CREATIVE MAPPING: HydroGlobe in Cambodia HydroGlobe is a project proposal to use a blockchain ICO to develop sustainable water filtration systems in underdeveloped countries. Using Ethereum cryptocurrency, investors purchase shares from HydroGlobe, which are then resold on the blockchain market. These funds, paired with external company partnerships and global connections, are used to develop solar-powered water filtration kiosk systems to supply clean water to underdeveloped countries. This project development aims to connect the blockchain and cryptocurrency world run by the wealthy to the global people through humanitarian and sustainable efforts. To further develop this project proposal, we [...]
Art should focus on how we are similar. Highlighting things we have in common or experiences we've shared. Specific instances where unity occurred and feelings were universal. At the beginning of the semester, I had a conversation with Bill where we began to unpack, "What ARE interactive cultural artifacts?" If I'm going to develop super objects* that appropriately address social, political, and/or cultural issues – how can we do so without appropriation? I suggested the need to shift focus to something we all share, something we all have in common, something on which we can all unite –towards as one shared cause. This [...]
Physical things can connect us across time, space, and culture. We navigate through a material world through their preservation and use. The importance of "object" seems obvious, especially in conversations surrounding data visualization. It allows us visual access to data in easily digestible visuals. The main goal of data visualization is to communicate information clearly and effectively through graphical means. To convey ideas effectively, both aesthetic form and functionality need to go hand-in-hand, providing insight into a rather sparse and complex data set by communicating its key-aspects in a more intuitive, tangible way. The physical object is often defined as an [...]
Nostalgia is a powerful concept. The idea of "yesterday" is revered by all. The idea of what was before us is quite comforting, safe. As I started searching through my notes I came across a section of text from the Edward Tufte data visualization seminar I attended after my first year in the program. I believe I've shared with you the experience of the seminar. I sat between a doctor and an electrical engineer. Bizarre. At the lunch break, I was contemplating not returning but then ran into Ross M.(fellow grad) and decided to have lunch and stay for [...]
RESEARCH AND INSPIRATIONS: this section should include ideas, quotes, snippets of readings, embedded videos, inspirational images, links related to the course or a current assignment/project Solar power is a wonderful way to harness the nuclear energy of our nearest star, but it’s more than that. It’s a new way of life that promises a brighter future – pun intended – helps eliminate smog, strip mining, and the burning of fossil fuels. Yet, it’s still more. In itself, solar power is a work of art as much as it is a science. It’s a celebration of green energy and human [...]
In Cambodia 84% of the population does not have access to clean, safe water. The Mekong River flows through this area of Southeast Asia and it is often affected by monsoon season from May to November. How could a place that has a river flowing through it and a monsoon season be in a water crisis? A lack of technology, contamination of water, and a reliance on rainfall for drinking water contribute to the water crisis in Cambodia. http://www.ecorazzi.com/2012/03/22/world-water-day-10-places-most-in-need-of-clean-water/
After our meeting, I decided to resurrect some text/notes from my earlier classes/lectures/seminars. (below) Surprisingly, these notes were telling. Telling because I begin to see some crystallization between two possible directions for a specific thesis direction! Advertising - Mid-century remediation (the ability of "object" to contain emotion/meaning/connection in ways not previously imagined) SustainABILITY (environmentally awareness through sustainably-minded projects)
CONCLUSION: We discussed the need to start writing. Write. Sketch. Mockup. THESIS DIRECTION importance of object things or ways to explore this as a new product
http://denver.cbslocal.com/2017/04/19/denver-ozone-ranked-11th-worst-in-u-s/ We discussed how "brown cloud" should be lower, not high, so it disrupts viewing as well as space/sound. We reviewed the following status of this project. I was unable to get downstairs to create molds/do digital clay until Spring quarter. I found a low-poly cloud model. (Maya render above) I tried to purchase a porcelain low-poly cloud I uploaded to Shapeways. They wanted 22 days and approx. $3,000 for one cloud. PROJECT #2 The additional materials have arrived! I believe I have everything needed to create the surveillance object. [...]
At Design Curio in Miami, a number of designers showed concern that tradition and cultural identity are being left behind. (December 2017) Each Curio reveals a total environment of objects, textures, artifacts, and ideas that challenge and contextualize familiar design narratives. MEETING #1 We discussed the logistics of the "brown cloud" in motion. For sensors, perhaps PIR is not the best tool for this project. Kinect? Next steps would be: Create a smaller scale version (module) that can be duplicated into modules. Create 4-5 ceramic clouds (w/Mia) We'll (you and I) will develop the best motion detection possible for [...]

RESEARCH AND INSPIRATIONS: this section should include ideas, quotes, snippets of readings, embedded videos, inspirational images, links related to the course or a current assignment/project Art has a way of seeping into the consciousness of everyday people, which is crucial to any kind of change. While Iranian “tree huggers” were busy planting tree stumps in Kerman to draw attention to deforestation, a different kind of protest was unveiled at a school in Tehran. Concerned about Iran’s dubious distinction of having the most polluted cities in the world, several artists and an actor launched the Tehran Monoxide Project art [...]

RESEARCH AND INSPIRATIONS: this section should include ideas, quotes, snippets of readings, embedded videos, inspirational images, links related to the course or a current assignment/project You've been sharing a lot about yourself to us lately. One of the projects you discussed wanting to develop in your own practice is a solar-powered LED field. Between you and me, they need that here. I can't imagine life without knowing what a field of fireflies (lightning bugs) looks like ...and people who have always lived here will never know. CO2LED In this stunning public-art installation, five-hundred twenty-two solar-powered [...]
Write about the connections between the two texts. For example, in what ways is it a protest to "unearth" infrastructure? What is being unearthed by the electronics projects? To reveal something that is typically hidden is exposing that which lives in the dark, bringing it to light. I can imagine that this exposure could be viewed as protest – as Networks of New York unearths or exposes the symbols of the mysterious and magical internet. In the same way, the Disobedient Electronics could be viewed as protest as the mechanical objects are not behaving, performing as intended, [...]
